The Town of Woodbridge was proud to welcome a special guest to Town Hall this week as a local fifth-grade student stepped into the role of First Selectman for the Day, gaining a behind-the-scenes look at local government and making meaningful contributions of her own.

The day began with an official swearing-in ceremony, where Violet Skuret was sworn in by Town Clerk Kim Rioux with a customized oath of office and was recognized as “First Selectman for the Day.” She then toured Town Hall departments, meeting staff and learning how various offices work together to serve the community.

The experience continued with visits to the Woodbridge Police Department, the Woodbridge Town Library, and Human Services, offering a well-rounded look at how the Town supports residents every day. Following the tour, she joined First Selectman Mica Cardozo for a working lunch, where the conversation turned to her recent Girl Scout Bronze Award project, building bat boxes to support local wildlife and promote environmental awareness.

Inspired by her work, she took on one of the key responsibilities of town leadership: issuing an official proclamation. As part of her role, she declared “Bat Awareness Day” to be recognized in the Town of Woodbridge on April 17, 2026, in alignment with International Bat Awareness Day.

Her proclamation encourages residents to learn more about “the importance of bats in controlling tick, mosquito, and other annoying bug populations, and to help protect bat habitats by building their own bat boxes.”

In addition to her proclamation, she provided thoughtful input on the Town’s future Community Center, offering ideas for creating welcoming, engaging spaces for young residents.

“Her ideas were insightful, creative, and exactly the kind of perspective we need as we plan for the future,” said First Selectman Cardozo. “It was a great reminder that leadership can start at any age.”

The Town of Woodbridge was proud to offer an opportunity like “First Selectman for a Day” to engage young residents in civic life, encourage leadership, and highlight the importance of community involvement.
