Letter: Recycle Your Mattress This Earth Day

In honor of Earth Day, Woodbridge residents have a simple opportunity to make a meaningful impact: recycle old mattresses and box springs at the town transfer station through April.
The Mattress Recycling Council’s Bye Bye Mattress program provides a convenient, no-cost way to keep bulky waste out of landfills while delivering real value to our community. Over the past decade, more than 2 million mattresses from Connecticut have been recycled, diverting over 32,000 tons of materials like steel, foam, and wood from the waste stream. These materials are broken down locally, supporting jobs and turned into new products such as carpet padding and insulation.
Beyond the environmental benefits, mattress recycling saves municipalities millions in disposal costs, reduces illegal dumping, supports research into new recycling markets, and helps avoid the expense of shipping waste out of Connecticut. Nearly 400 businesses and institutions in Connecticut now participate, ensuring even large volumes are responsibly managed.
Programs like Bye Bye Mattress show that smart recycling isn’t a burden, it’s a practical, cost-saving solution that benefits both residents and the environment.
Woodbridge Earth Day 2026 will take place on Saturday, April 25, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., on the Woodbridge Town Campus. It’s a great opportunity to learn more about local sustainability efforts while taking action. I encourage residents to participate on April 25th, and to recycle their old mattresses and box springs at 85 Acorn Hill Road Extension now through the end of the month.
