Letter: Zoning Control at Risk in Fountain Street Dispute

Dear Editor,
As decades-long homeowners and taxpayers in Woodbridge, we are concerned that reckless slogans and sound bites concerning the Fountain Street project belie something far more serious: the risk that careless political posturing could cost Woodbridge its ability to control its own zoning regulations.
Woodbridge is currently defending itself against a lawsuit alleging a lack of affordable housing. If a court finds that town leaders acted arbitrarily, or that the First Selectman interfered in the Fountain Street application, the consequences could be devastating. The court could strip the town of control over its own zoning.
That is precisely why First Selectman Mica Cardozo has avoided making public pronouncements about the Fountain Street project, allowing the Town Planning and Zoning Commission to review the application independently and on its merits.
Make no mistake: if candidate Rob Rosasco’s Republican slate succeeds in politicizing the process, it will be Woodbridge residents who pay the price.
Mica Cardozo’s restraint as to the Fountain Street project is not silence—it is responsibility. It protects Woodbridge taxpayers and ensures that the town’s decisions will stand up in court.
Most sincerely,
Brian Bodt and Carol Galloway
